James P Smyth(e)

'm trying to solve the mystery of my ancestor James P Smythe. He was with the Texas 31st Calvary and fought in the 1st battle of Newtonia Missouri. The records I found on fold3 say that he was injured. One of the documents says he was wounded and missing, another says he was discharged due to his injury. I cannot locate a pension application for him nor can I find him on the census after 1860.
