Re: Texans with Forrest-Capt N C Gould

Hello again, Mic. When our scv camp commander wanted to do a webpage for Camp Chase I volunteered and everything you see with the exception of the photographs I put together. It was a rush job to be sure and there are some mistakes that I have not had a chance to correct yet because of the biographies that I am doing.

When doing the webpage for our camp I wanted to have some fresh research information available for other researchers. I've collected so much information over the decades from various sources mostly from the National Archives. Our current webpage only has about 1/100 of the research material posted. From what I gather the site cannot hold enough material as of yet and I know little about computers. However the Fort Donelson prisoners are on the site.

Using google enter "camp 1535 camp chase" after you arrive there scroll down to "Official Camp Chase Records of Ft. Donelson Prisoners" (Large files take some time to download) I think there are three files of the Fort Donelson prisoners. Just download the files and start looking for N.C. Gould. The information either came from the Ohio Historical Society or the National Archives.

If my memory is correct Gould was from New England and was an attorney prior to the war. Some of the officers were paroled at Nashville for various reasons. Company D seems to have been detached from Forrest at a different location at Fort Donelson. I do not know if Gould had chosen not to go with Forrest or if somehow Gould had not received word about Forrest decision to leave Fort Donelson. Gould never again served with Forrest after Donelson from what I've learned.

We can now look back at history and see how brilliant Forrest really was. However at Fort Donelson Colonel Forrest did not have much of a reputation military wise and his way of talking and acting may have scared Gould. Imagine your Colonel not being able to write a full sentence without spelling errors and wanting to take your company out of surrounded Fort and fight your way out. While Colonel Forrest did outfit some of his companies I don't believe he outfitted Company D. And if my memory is correct there was another company at Fort Donelson who did not go with Forrest. A well educated man like Gould may have had concerns about his Colonel and what seemed to be a wreck-less attempt to escape. But this is pure conjecture on my part.

If you do not see Gould's name on the list then I would assume he was not at Camp Chase. I also have another list of Fort Donelson prisoners that were brought to Camp Chase as printed in the Columbus, Ohio newspaper "The Ohio Journal" I want to say it was about March 1, 1862. The list might have been in two separate dates? February 28th and March 1st I can't remember at this time. If the library can not find the list then have them check with the "Crisis" it was a southern type of newspaper slanted towards the democrats. In one of those two newspaper the list some be found. What is nice about this list is that you too can have a copy. Just call the downtown Columbus Public library and ask for the research aid room on the 3rd floor. Tell them what you would like to have and the dates and they will scan the article and send it to you free of charge to your email address. From what I remember Gould does not appear on this list and some of the names have spelling errors. There were lieutenants in company D at Camp Chase however again if my memory is correct. Hope this helps.
