Re: Gano's Squadron, Texas Cavalry

My greatgrandfather was in Gano's Brigade, his name was Z. J. Parkerson, actually Zadoc Jackson Parkerson, and was assigned to the 7th Kentucky Cavalry, I have a copy of a newspaper interview he did in about 1917.
From Z. J. Parkerson, Iona, Tex
"I enlisted with the Confederate Army in 1861, Gano's squadron; served through the war with Gano's Regiment, Morgan's Division, Duke's Brigade, Company A. My Captain's name was Spears of Grapevine, Texas. I participated in the following important battles: Murfreesboro, Tenn; Richmond, Ky., and Lexington, and skirmishes too numerous to mention. I am often asked if I killed any Federalists, I do not know, but I killed as many of them as they killed of me. I was never captured nor arrested. I always led the company in skirmishes. I could go faster on a shabby pony than any man I ever saw.
Our brigade was captured July 19, 1863 at Buffington Island, Ohio. Cad Raines and I escaped by swimming the river at night and made it back to Texas. From the exposure to camp life I contracted asthma, and the remainder of the war I reported monthly to Gano."
