Re: Yellow Bayou Battle, Red River Campaign

My great grandfather, William M White, a Cpl with Company E of the 17th Texas, fought at Milliken's Bend (and possibly other encounters) before being sent to Fort DeRussy where the defenders of the Fort were overwhelmed by much superior numbers. The captured were sent, eventually, to New Orleans. William and others were also exchanged late in the war at Red River Landing. William and the others are said to have made it back to the Shreveport area, rejoined the Texas Division, marched back to Plantation Liendo where, upon arrival, they found the war had ended. William started and ended the war there as he had trained there at the beginning of the war. Maybe your ancestor made it back to Texas, but not home.
