If you have ever heard of the Southern version of the song "Battle Cry of Freedom" you would remember the line, " Down with the Eagle and up with the Cross." That is due to the fact that at the start of the war, many flag staffs were taken from churches to be used by the units forming in each area. The South being the "Bible Belt" had many Christian flag poles for the troops to have. As in the early war the taking of church bells for cannon was also taking place. So if your doing early war, have a cross on top, late war, break it off, and or the spear point. Why break it off, by mid war, many units made do, and the church flag staffs were gone, broken, abused to the point of not even being a tooth pick at that point. The metal for flag staffs may have gone for pike points, which Lee was thinking about doing.
