Re: Edward Willis, 27th Texas Cavalry, Co. C

The regiment had recently been dismounted at Des Arc by Van Dorn's orders. While researching Van Dorn, I also made some notes just for my personal use. Some of those notes made reference to the 27th Texas Cavalry and perhaps of interest in following their trail from Arkansas to Memphis and on to Corinth:

4/14/62 ref to man returning to Texas with horses of Whitfield Legion

4/14- Co M formed from transfers of Co D-27th Tx Cav

National Archives and Library of Congress
4/15 Morning Report, Col J W Whitfield
Camp Arche Price, Ark

4/15—27th Tx Cav-67 men of Co I transferred to form Co N by Van Dorn's order

4/15 orders from Van Dorn shifting men of 27th Tx DC to various Co’s

4/15 Des Arc, Ark-Whitfield’s Legion was temporarily dismounted by Van Dorn’s orders with the understanding that they would still receive the pay and privileges and emoluments of cavalry

4/15 LtCol of 27th Tx Cav apptd/elected

4/19 the organization of Whitfield’s Legion was not [formally] completed until 4/19, when Capt E.R. Hawkins was elected Lt-Col, & Private S. Holman, Major. The command was composed of 11 Co’s from Texas & 2 from Ark, up to, & a short time after the reorganization, when the Ark Co B - Capt W. Catterson - was transferred to an Ark command.

Williams; H, Capt _____; I, Capt Jesse M. Cook; K, Capt _____; L, Capt _____; M, Capt O. P. Preston; N, Capt _____. Major Holman resigned, & Capt John H. Broocks was promoted in his stead.

Here is a link to a man who will do lookups for the many Confederate soldiers buried in Elmwood Cemetary in Memphis [A beautiful place by the way]

Your man could have been part of the detail returning the horses of the regiment to Texas and perhaps died on the way.

Or, he could have taken in sick like many others and died in Memphis

Or, he could have died on the way to Corinth from Memphis or soon after his regiment arrived at the Corinth camps.

They were not engaged with the enemy during this time period. The next fight was at Farmington [near Corinth] on May 9th.

Wish I had more than these bits and pieces to help with your search. Good luck.
