My paternal great grandfather was Thomas M. Presley. He enlisted June, 1861, in Smith County as a private. His first muster roll says he was in Capt.D.Y. Gaines' Company, South Kansas-Texas Reg't Mounted Volunteers. The next available muster roll dated May-June 1862 shows him in Co K., 3rd Texas Cav. His paymaster was Capt. E.P. Hill. On the May-June 1964 muster roll. it is noted he was "on daily duty as scout on order of Gen. Jackson. Who is this Gen. Jackson?
