When you say scrip, are you talking about paper currency issued by the government? Smith County, Texas, began issuing county notes in May, 1862, in denominations of 25 cents, 50 cents, $1.00, $2.00, $3.00, and $5.00. I've looked at commissioners court records for several other counties, and they also started issuing county notes about the same time. The wording generally ran something like "The Treasurer of Smith County will pay Fifty Cents to bearer, in Confederate Notes, in sums of Twenty Dollars. Tyler, Texas, Sept. 24th, 1862" and signed by the County Clerk. The state of Texas also issued treasury warrants.
