Ancestor at a dead-end

Does anyone know how I can find out how my ancestors ended up at Mansfield?
1. John Wesley Connor- 14th Texas Cavalry; KIA at Mansfield. Footnotes.com Confederate Military Record only have coversheet and compensation for horse and gear fot the 14th. Thats all. What happened between 14th cav. muster 1861 and then ending up at Mansfield. I don't believe the 14th was at Mansfield.
2. Robert T.Connor- 1st Texas Infantry; WIA at Mansfield. Footnotes.com Confederate Military Record extensive, wounded at 2nd Manassas and afterward wounded at Suffolk then sent home on wounded furlough. Then reported to Gen.Smith and wounded again at Mansfield. I can't seem to find out who he was with at Mansfield. Does anyone have any ideas about finding out the missing details?
