Reference to local of supplies in the report would have been metal items, Tobacco, etc. Food in the 1860 Kerr county would have been ample. Deer, Camel, Buffalo, Rabbits, some fruits, etc. were plentiful. Fish were available within an half day ride. There was plenty of grass for horses. San Antonio was a hard days ride, but Bandera was only a few hours. There were only a handful of settlers in the county but a lot of Comanche. Leather from deer and buffalo caused the men to dress in skins. Cotton did not last long riding in all kinds of weather on a horse. The fort was in a valley between present day Kerrville and Bandera. It had a creek and rivers in all directions. The main were the Medina and Guadelupe Rivers. There are springs in the area, so water was plentiful. If I were starving, this is the place to do it. It took a little work, but the soldiers were much better off than their Confederate kin. I am a resident of west Kerr county which is rougher, but still plentiful with food.
