The 5th Regiment, Texas Partisan Rangers, was organized in 1863 by combining the remnants of the 10th (Martin's) Texas Cavalry Battalion and the 9th (Randolph's) Texas Cavalry Battalion. Martin's Regiment appears to have been organized on 23 October 1862 with four companies. In 1863, it was increased to a regiment with an additional 2 independent companies and 4 companies of 1st Randolph's Battalion and called the 5th Texas Partisan Rangers.
The 5th Regiment served primarily in Arkansas and in the Indian Territory. This regiment was commanded by Col. Leonidas M. Martin. See, Texas in the War, 1861-1865 by Marcus J. In 1864, they were at Camp Elm Creek in the Chickasaw Nation and in 1865; they were at Camp Sims Bayou.
Hugh Mordicai Fuller returned home soon after the war, ragged, dirty and covered with lice. When he recovered from these ills, his first concern was to put the farm back in order.
