Thanks Art. So far the only source of Williams' service that I've consulted is the single interview with her. I appreciate your insights. Interestingly enough, although Frederick P. Todd, in American Military Equipage, 1851-172, points out that from 1864 all USCT were issued regulation uniforms, he cite a QM Dept. letter that reports issuing undersize French Zouave clothing to the musicians and bands of colored regiments. Cathy Williams never claimed to be a musician, of course, but at least this one reference presents the possibility that some Zouave dress may have been utilized in small quantities, possible among the occupation troops in Texas. Only more reasearch will tell.
