Carter's 21st Cav, Co I; McCord's 1860

Please help me understand Guthrie’s account of his life as a Texas Ranger, that he wrote at age 83. At age 13, this orphan enrolled as a Ranger and had to wait until his 14th birthday to muster into McCord’s militia commanded by Capt. E. Burleson. My W.F. “Matt” Guthrie research can be seen on:

W.F. ‘Matt’ Guthrie has consfused the Carson brothers. Evidently, he served two hitches in a company with James R. Carson. ... and only served a short time with Lt. Nathan F. Carson’s company, but was present for the Oct 13, 1864 Battle of Elm Creek, Young Co TX.
.
Question: When did James R. Carson serve in Carter’s 21st TX Cav, Co ‘I’ ?
.
Question: Who were the 20 men in McCord’s 1860 militia referenced in Paddock’s HIST & BIOS ?
