L. M. Ethridge was residing near Port Sullivan, Milam County, Texas in 1860. He enlisted in Company D, 17th Texas Infantry on June 30, 1862. According to information in his service record, he died of fever at Camp Nelson, Arkansas November 12, 1862. The death date does not match the date on the marker. His widow Martha Ethridge was still living in Milam County in 1870.
