The 21st Regiment Texas Cavalry was organized in May, 1862, with ten companies, A to K. Company L, which appears to have been formed by the division of Company C, 24th Regiment Texas Cavalry, was added later. The regiment was also known as the 1st Regiment Texas Lancers, the 2nd Regiment Texas Lancers and the 1st Regiment Carter's Brigade Texas Mounted Volunteers
