The unit you refer to was probably the 10th Battalion, Texas State Troops. It was organized for Confederate service and consisted of cavalry and infantry companies. The battalion was later broken up with the cavalry companies being assigned to the 1st Cavalry Regiment, TST and the infantry becoming part of the 2nd Infantry Regiment, TST.

There was also a 10th regiment or battalion of the Texas Reserve Corps that had at least one company from Cherokee County. This unit guarded Federal prisoners at Camp Ford, Tyler, Texas.
