Weapons for Texas BrigadeBy:Kevin Jones

Date: Thursday, 7 August 2003, 1:48 pm In the past I corresponded with someone with the handle "P&M Bailey" or something to that effect but lost the e-mail address when I lost my hard drive. This person was extremely interested in the arms used by the Texas Brigade in Virginia and this may be the place to make contact with this person again.

Since our last correspondence I have found a reference, which states that Enfield rifles provided to the Texas regiments were off the blockade-runner Bermuda and were fitted with sword bayonets. The reference is the November 2, 1861 issue if the San Antonio Weekly Herald page 1 column 5 in an article titled "Editorial from Virginia". The copy I used is in extraordinarily poor shape and not much of it is legible which is why I missed it on previous examinations. The article provides some extremely useful information on the initial outfitting of the 4th and 5th Texas and I will endeavor to find a better copy.

Good to reestablish contact with you. I'm the guy that has corresponded with you in the past regarding the ordnance of the Texas Brigade.

Thanks for this latest information gleaned from the November 2, 1861 issue of the San Antonio Weekly Herald. I look forward to learning more about the article if you are fortunate to locate a more legible copy.

Sorry to hear about your hard drive problems. Hope they have been resolved. I sent you an additional e-mail or two during in the late spring or summer, but never heard back from you. Now I understand why.

Are you at the same e-mail address as before?

I am sure I can get a better copy at U.T. and I'll make the trip as soon as I have enough items that need to be researched to justify the trip. I working with someone who is writting a history of the First Texas so it won't be too long before I go.

I was just checking with you again (years later ...:-O ) and following up with your last message above to see if you ever made it to U.T. regarding the better copy of your above referenced article/letter published in the November 2, 1861 issue if the San Antonio Weekly Herald page 1 column 5 in an article titled "Editorial from Virginia":
