I am writing a reference book about the Texas Rangers from 1823 to the present. The era I am having the most trouble with is the Civil War, specifically the Frontier Regiment. I have looked through the Compiled Service Records at Hill College, muster and pay rolls, correspondence, and other material at TSLAC, and read numerous books (including Patricia Rochette's), master's theses (including Mike Thomasson's), and doctoral dissertations). The biggest problem I am having is that some captains, such as Allen Brunson and J. J. Cureton, are listed as being commanders of different companies at the same time. I imagine that the company letter designations were changed some time (maybe August '63?) during their tenures, but I cannot find a definite reference to it.

Some of the dates of service for captains overlap from predecessor to successor. I guess the latter's dates would be when the individual enlisted and before he took command, but I do not know that for sure.

I am going to UT-Austin in March to look through the Buck Barry and William Quayle Papers, so possibly some of my questions can be answered from those.

If anyone has company rosters, muster rolls, or monthly returns (with dates) and would be willing to share them, I would appreciate any assistance given me.
