There was also an Asa Chandler who served in Company E with William Chandler. According to the 1860 census they were both born in Alabama and were farmers. Asa, though, was living in Angelina County in 1860, and William was living in Cherokee County. In 1860, Asa was 30 years old and William was 21 years old; perhaps they were brothers? I have no record of William Chandler dying during the war. He was not a casualty during the Red River campaign, and he doesn't appear in any newspaper lists of those who died of disease. On the other hand, records are incomplete.
