Re: Likens 35th Texas Cavalry Roster

I sent you an email, but also replying here in hopes this thread is still active.

My 4th great-grandfather was of one of those men, and I have four letters from his time in service there. Included inside the letters are additional names that may add to your list.

My ancestor's name was William Christopher Romine, although he usually just listed his name as W.C. Romine. He had originally served with Capt Scott's Company of Crumps Battalion (32nd Texas Cavalry, Co B) beginning Feb 1862, then went home on disability in Jul/Aug 1862 (sciatic rheumatism and loss of use of one leg - they had dismounted the cavalry into infantry). WC lived in Titus and then Hopkins County, Texas, during the Civil War. I'm not sure how he ended up enlisting with the Burns Battalion in Robertson County, but these 4 letters clearly indicate he was with them. (I know Magruder was actively putting on the pressure for more Texans to come defend their shoreline from any retaliation after capturing Galveston, so perhaps my ancestor felt fighting within TX as part of a Cavalry was something he could handle). His letters while with the 35th were dated from Sept 11, 1863, as part of Burns Battalion, through Dec 21, 1863, as part of Liken's Regiment, Co K.

The 1st letter indicated he was at Camp Sellers & directed his wife to write to Owensville, Robinson [should have said Robertson] County, Company B, Maj Burns Battalion. The letter named 2 other men (Tom Herkley and Mr Reding, as well as the man who delivered the letter, Mr Dodson). His next letter was Nov 11, 1863, from Limestone County (postmarked Springfield TX) on the march to Houston. He indicated they had attached to Likens Regiment & to direct letters to Likens Regiment, Ca George's Co. That letter named a man who had been left behind sick with mumps and another who had left the company since they started out. You can view the letters, but it appears to read William Redan/Pedan who was left sick and James Helums who left AWOL. The 3rd letter was Dec 8, 1863, at Camp Muddy near Velasco, as was the Dec 20/21st letter. The latter directed his wife to write to Houston Likens Regiment, Co K.

WC Romine must have left the 35th in early 1864 (he had a daughter born Apr 3rd). There are no other letters from him with that regiment, and he re-enlisted with the 9th Texas Cavalry in May/June 1864. His brother Reuben Romine had been serving with the 9th since the start of the war, and WC's letters from the 35th frequently often asked his wife about his brother's status (their other brother had been seriously wounded). Unfortunately, WC Romine was mortally wounded Dec 15th and died Dec 18th in Murfreesboro, TN, during their efforts of capturing the fully loaded supply train south of that place (simultaneous to the Battle of Nashville). He was a Private for all his years of service, and his name is listed on the Evergreen Cemetery monument in Murfreesboro (mispelled WC Rominer).

Once I have confirmation of a reply by a researcher for the 35th, I will be happy to provide copies of the Civil War letters previously discussed.

Thank you for the research on the 35th! The available information on Burns/Likens/35th is sorely lacking for genealogists like myself. I would welcome any additional information you have regarding my ancestor as well as Burns & Likens service locations, skirmishes, etc. I'm writing about my ancestor's service for a family book. (I have what I believe to be a photo of WC Romine, in addition to his letters, in my possession).

Kind regards,
Allison King Todd
