The Tennessee in the Civil War Message Board

Col. Biffle, Court Martial

This is a long shot, but since Col. Biffle's name has appeared on the message board, I'll take the shot. In researching my great grandfather's regiment, 6th Georgia Cavalry, I came across a voucher in his company commander's, Captain John R. Lay, records. The voucher paid Lay 1 dollar a day, for 18 days, for attending a court martial. The court was established by General Order #5, Department of East Tennessee. The voucher is signed by the President of the Court, Col. J. B. Biffle. It is dated July 29, 1864. It is my understanding by this time both the 6th GA and Biffle's regiment was with the Army of Tennessee, defending Atlanta. Also both regiments served with Longstreet in East Tennessee during the Knoxville Campaign. Perhaps this is where the reason for the court martial developed. Does anyone know what General Order #5 was, or if court martial records for the Department of East Tennessee still exist?
