J. A. Sowell, Private, Company E, 9th Regiment Tennessee Cavalry,* enlisted October 10, 1862 at Columbia by Col. Biffle for 3 years, surrendered at Citronelle, Ala., by Lt. Gen. R. Taylor May 4, 1865 and paroled at Gainesville, Ala., May 10, 1865, resident of Columbia, Maury County, Tenn.
* This regiment was organized about October 3, 1862, and designated the 19th Regiment Tennessee Cavalry, but it was known in the field and mustered as the 9th Regiment Tennessee Cavalry. Paroled at Gainesville, Alabama, in May 1865, as the 9th Regiment Tennessee Cavalry
Also in Company E, was Private, W. G. Sowell, resident of Laurnceburg, Laurence County, Tenn. whose only record is that of J. A. Sowells surrender/parole
Note: There appears to be no surviving company muster rolls for this regiment which could provide information on his service history
