Hi John......... I'm a native of east Tennessee and had several ancestors in this regiment. 1st Lieut and Regimental Adjt. Charles S. Newman mustered Nov.7,1862 at Haynesville ( present-day Johnson City,Tennessee ) He was appointed Adjt. on Oct 1, 1862. Was captured ( along with many from this regiment ) at Big Black River,Mississippi May 17,1863. He spent most of the war a p.o.w. at Johnson's Island, Sandusky, Ohio. He was " released for exchange " Feb.24,1865 and sent to City,Point, Virginia. There he signed his parole agreeing not to take up arms again till exchanged.
