Re: Co. H 2nd TN (Ashby's ) Cavalry CSA

Dear Rick;
Glad to hear from you!
I am sure you have the same info from pension but here is what I have:

Co.H. Private. Enlisted: June 17, 1861 at Knoxville, Tennessee by James W. Gillespie for 12 months. Paid: December 31, 1861 by Capt. H.T. Massingale. Present May-June 1862 muster roll. Paid: February 28, 1862 by Capt. J.G. Dent. Absent July-August 1862 muster roll listed: Absent sick at hospital Surgeon's certificate since June 8, 1862. Paid: October 31, 1862 by Capt. Wm. V. Sevier. Absent Jan.-Feb. 1863 muster roll listed: Absent missing since battle Stone's River. Present March 13, 1864 company muster roll near Tunnel Hill, Georgia. Age: 21. Re-enlisted March 20, 1864 at Tunnel Hill, Georgia by Capt. Clark Rhodes for duration of war. Paid: December 31, 1863 by Capt. Wm. V. Sevier. Present Nov.-Dec. 1864 muster roll listed: Present detailed as Provost Guard. On muster roll of officers and men paroled at Charlotte, North Carolina May 3, 1865. Residence: Post Oak Springs, Tennessee. NFR. Applied for Confederate Soldiers Pension April 14, 1905 No. 6889; Accepted. He states:
"I was born on the 10th January 1838, County of Anderson, State of Tennessee. I am a native of the State of Tennessee and now reside at Rockwood in the County of Roane in said State of Tennessee and was a soldier from State of Tennessee."
"I was wounded at battle of Monticello, Kentucky and Loudon, Tennessee. I was shot through the right thigh and shattered bone at Monticello, Ky. and shot in hand at Loudon, Tn. Contracted measles at Big Creek Gap, Tn. and blindness."
"I was not discharged because of wounds but discharged by furlough. Dr. George Frazier was the Surgeon that attended me. I was paroled in April 1865 at Charlotte, N.C. and did not take the oath of allegiance."
Married and had one daughter. Post war occupation: farming and hauled wood with wife's help.
Fellow comrade R.F. Kindrick states under oath:
"... I was in the same Brigade for most of the time. W.W. Huddleston was in a fight as we retreated form Kentucky somewhere in the vicinity of Somerset, Ky. and in the engagement was shot in hip, causing a severe wound and laying him up for some time, the ball has never been taken out. This fight was with Federal cavalry who were following us. We were at the time bringing out a drove of cattle for the Confederate Army. I personally know that he was wounded in the service at this place and time and he made a good soldier. I have heard that he was also shot at or about Loudon, Tn. but was not with him at the time..."
Wife: Mary Elizabeth Huddleston applied for Confederate Widows Pension March 21, 1919 No. 7140: Accepted. She states:
"I was born June 20th 1862 in Roane County, Tn. and now reside at Rockford, Roane County, Tn. My maiden name was Mary E. Wilson. My husband was born Jan. 10th, 1841. We were married 18th of December 1887 by Rev. Hicks Spurling. We had one son, now deceased. William died near Eureka, Roane County, Tn. Sept. 29, 1918."
William lived at Texas Confederate Home at Austin, Texas for a time before returning home to Tennessee. Born: January 10, 1841. Died: September 29, 1918. Buried: Roane County, Tennessee.

I hope this is helpful! I know there is a difference in their chid's gender. One said daughter, the other son. Do you know which is correct and also do you know the cemetery he is buried in?
I hope to have my book out in 1-2 years. I keep finding information and I want to do justice to these heroic men! One of my ancestors was captured on the Ky. Raid of 1863 and spent the rest of the war in Union prisons. I hope some day we can meet and honor our Southern heroes!
Take care!
Sincerely,
Doug Smith
