Sequatchie County in the Civil War

Would appreciate anyone with knowledge of the war in Marion and especially Sequatchie County ( around Dunlap,Tn.) helping me out. Did this area come under Federal control fairly early in the war ? Ancestor / relatives William & Jesse Land, along with their brother-in-law Abraham Pearl Wimberly joined what would become Co.H 35th Tenn. early in the war. Their short CMSR's show them all 3 " home on sick leave " then reported " deserted." Oral family history says they were caught at home and never able to rejoin the rebel army. In March 1865 William joined Co.E of the Union 6th Tn.Mtd.Inf. and fought deserter & bushwhacker bands till Sept 65 for which he later drew a pension. Does their situation sound anywhere near correct. Trying to glean some facts from " family tales " for a short family Civil War history. I'd appreciate some help !!!!

Thanks,
