George M. Shafer, age 22, Private, Capt. R. Roddie's Company, 1st East Tennessee Rifle Regiment,* enlisted September 1, 1861 at Henderson Depot by R. Roddie for 12 months, promoted 5th Sergeant May 15, 1862, later recorded as 2nd Sergeant, killed on the field September 19, 1863**

* This company subsequently became Company F, 37th Regiment Tennessee Infantry

Company H, Record of Events, "Then marched to Chickamauga Creek and took part in the Battle of the 19 & 20, Sept., 1863, Loosing killed 1 Sergt, wounded 1 Capt. & 3 privates"

** The last, 11th, card in his file records a G. M. Shafer, Sgt., Co. F 4th Battalion, Georgia Sharp Shooters, who appears on a list of killed and wounded, in Caswell's 4th Ga. Battalion Sharp Shooter, in the battle of Chickamauga, Ga., Sept. 18 to 20, 1863, killed

Note: I do not find a man by this name in the roster of the 4th Ga. Battalion
