To answer your question--
Following the horrific fight on May 31, 1862 the 7th held their position into the night. During that night the Union troops opposite them fell back, leaving the 7th's front clear. On June 1, 1862; the 7th sent out skirmishers to determine the Federal position but found their front empty. The 7th remained in position, tending their wounded, burying their dead, and re-organizing.
