BGen. George Washington Morgan was born in Washington County, Pennyslvania, September 20, 1820. He did not graduate from West Point, which he entered in 1841, but took up the practice of law in Mount Vernonl, Ohio. But he went to the Mexican War and was brevetted brigadier-general.

He had left college at 16 to join in the Texas War for Independence where he held the rank of Capt. Entering USMA in 1841 he resigned in his second year and then studied law. Boatner's Civil War Dictionary
