The Tennessee in the Civil War Message Board

Middle Tennessee CWRT - March 16, 2010 Meeting

The next meeting of the Middle Tennessee CWRT will be at 7 PM on Tuesday March 16, 2010. We will meet at the Heritage Center of Murfreesboro and Rutherford County (225 West College Street in Murfreesboro).

Our speaker will be Thomas Flagel of Columbia State Community College. He will present The Place of Resurrection: A History of Appomattox Court House.

Famous is the story of luckless Wilmer McLean, who moved from the ravaged Manassas battlefield to seek peace and quiet at a tiny place called Appomattox . Less known is the ironic life of Appomattox itself. Transformed overnight from a humble county seat to an instant national icon, what can this fateful hallowed ground teach us?

Historian Thomas Flagel will examine the birth, decline, and resurrection of this historic Civil War place of peace, and how it came to symbolize countless towns like it, utterly and forever transformed by a painful conflict that shapes our national landscape to this day.

The Middle Tennessee Civil War Round Table meets every third Tuesday of the month at the Heritage Center of Murfreesboro and Rutherford County in Murfreesboro, Tennessee. Membership applications are available at each meeting. Membership costs $15 per year for individuals and $20 for families. All meetings are open to the public regardless of membership status. Each meeting will include time for interested parties to share stories and memorabilia from the Civil War era with the membership.
