C J. Crofts enlisted as a Private in Company D, 3rd Tennessee Infantry on March 1, 1862 at Benton into Company "D" Co. TN 3rd Infantry , captured at Vicksburg July 4, 1863, paroled 6 days later, no further records

The 3rd Tennessee, an East Tennessee regiment, served in Col. Alexander Welsh Reynold's brigade at Vicksburg. Subsequently they served with BGen. John Crawford Vaughn's Cavalry regiment until the end of the war.
