Capt. W. E. Yeatman Has Been Named by Col. Gaut -- Paper: The Knoxville Journal --Date: 1894-02-23

Assistant Postmaster

Capt. W. E. Yeatman was named by Col. Gaut yesterday to be assistant postmaster under him.

When the announcement was made a good many naturally inquired who Capt. Yeatman is? The captain, it is stated, was formally a citizen of Texas, and was induced to come to Knoxville by Col. R. S. Payne. For some time he acted as book keeper for the firm of Dick, Payne & Co on Market Square. After this firm sold out he was a short time with the East Tennessee National Bank. It is stated further, that the new assistant postmaster was captain of a company of Senator Bates regiment during the war, and very naturally has a warm place in the senator’s mind.

Capt. Yeatman has a family and lives near Fountain City. His salary will be $1,800 a year. He was requested by Col. Gaut to make out his bond as soon as possible and send it in as it was desirable to make the post office transfer at the beginning of the coming month, March 1st.

Col. Gaut had to give bonds in sums aggregating $60,000. Three gentleman are on the bond who qualified in sums aggregating nearly $400,000. The bond was forwarded to Washington yesterday.
