A good source would be local newspapers.

The Tennessee State Library and Archives in Nashville has a listing of CW era Tennessee newspapers which they hold on microfilm. They also have much other material which you can find on their website, which you can find through a Goggle Search.

You can view them there, purchase copies, or perhaps obtain via Interlibrary Loan.

I personally have copies of the Knoxville Register, Athens Post and Chattanooga Daily Rebel. Unfortunately, the one I'd really love to have is the Cleveland Banner which I have yet to find.

I find much interesting material therein. For instances, I've found a number of articles of flag presentations to local companies being sent off to war. They also include letters from soldiers at "the front," detailing events, casualty lists, etc.

Try also a Goggle search "Tennessee in the Civil War." I believe there is one site detailing Tennessee Research Resources.

For any given unit, the US Army Military History Institute, Carlisle Barracks, PA has detailed lists of holdings including diaries, letters, and photos where available.
