Clarksville (TN) CWRT - September meeting

The September, 2006 meeting of the Clarksville Civil War Roundtable will be held Wednesday, September 20th, 2006 at 7 PM in the cafe of Borders Books store in Governor's Square Mall. This is located on Wilma Rudolph Highway (US 79) just south of Exit 4 off I-24 in Clarksville, TN. The meeting is always open to interested members of the public.

This month's program is, "Kentucky's Jackson Purchase in the Civil War," and it will be presented by Greg Miller of Murray, KY.

The Jackson Purchase is all of the counties of the state west of the Tennessee River. It was named for the 1818 purchase from the Chickasaw Indians by agent (and future president)Andrew Jackson and the land was added to the state at that time expanding its boundary to the Mississippi River. The are was the hotbed of secessionism in Kentucky in 1860-1861.

Mr. Miller's program will cover how the Purchase came into being as well as its political and sociological history before delving into how they viewed themselves as being tied to the Deep South in the secession crisis. Most of the men who would serve in the Confederate Army from Kentucky came from this part of the state. They were the only part of Kentucky to elect a pro-South congressman in 1861. A number of raids and other engagements, including much guerilla activity also took place in the Purchase including Paducah, Columbus, Mayfield and others and Miller's program will cover them all.

Greg Miller is a US Navy veteran of submarines and he earned BS and MS degrees in History at Murray State University. His under-graduate minor is in archaeology/anthropology and he frequently works on various archaeological sites across Kentucky. He is a member of the Sons of Confederate Veterans, Disabled American Veterans and the American Legion and is past president of the Jackson Purchase Historical Society. He is currently researching a regimental history for the 50th Tennessee Infantry in the Civil War.

Please join us for an informative program from Greg Miller on Wednesday, September 20th with the Clarksville Civil War Roundtable.
