Re: East Tennessee Confederate Thomas Luster

There appears to be two Thomas Lusters in the 31st/39th. Thomas of Co. H appears to have gone over to the enemy or gone home. Thomas of Co. G left Vicksburg with the regiment marching to Enterprise where they were furloughed for 30 days to report to a parole camp at the end of that period. As no further muster rolls exist for either Company, we do not know if he served further.

Thomas Luster, 22, Private, Company H, 31st Tennessee Infantry,* enlisted March 19, 1861 by Col. W. M. Bradford at Midway for 12 months, appointed 4th Corporal June 16, 1862, returned to ranks December 1, captured at Vicksburg, Miss. July 4, 1863, paroled July 15, 1863, /s/ Thomas Luster, no further records

Note, it appears that he was either paroled from the hospital some five days after his regiment received their paroles, or elected to remain with the enemy until he could leave the area on his own. The latter seems to be the case as he does not appear on the list of Confederate soldiers paroled at Vicksburg. See: https://www.nps.gov/vick/learn/historyculture/confederate-parole-records-l.htm

* This regiment was subsequently designated the 39th Regiment Tennessee Infantry June 6, 1863. It was mounted Nov/Dec. 1863 and served as Cavalry thereafter

………

Thomas Luster, Private, Company G, 31st Tennessee Infantry,* enlisted September 30, 1862 in Hawkins Co., Tenn. by J. Ball for the war, captured at Vicksburg, Miss. July 4, 1863, paroled July 10,
recorded furloughed at Enterprise, Miss. July 22,1863, signed his parole certificate with with an ‘X’, “his mark”, no further records

Note, there are no company muster rolls which serviced for either company H or G subsequent to the Vicksburg surrender. Hence, we cannot ascertain any later service for either man
