Re: River Line, Atlanta Campaign

George,
Shoup, in Confed Vet expresses disappointment with Hood.
As his Corp was the last deployed his Corp had the least amount
of ground to cover.
Hood didn't understand Shoup's defensive concept.
Instead of filling the far left flank and putting the rest of his troops in
a mobile reserve, Hood chose to EXTEND THE LEFT FLANK beginning
where the initial part of the line bent back toward the river.
Hood chose to knock down parts of the palisades (along present day
Oakdale rd) and dig regular trenches not utilizing Shoupades.
You can tell this in the maps by the way the line does NOT conform to
the countryside. This is very visible on Scaife's maps.

By the way THANX for steering me to the RL website. I lived at the current
Shoupade Park (adjacent apt. complex) for several years and even tried to buy
the residence that had one of the Shoupades & part of the 2 gun arty pos. at
the re-entrant angle.
PLEASANT MEMORIES!!
