Re: TN Army of the Cumberland Organizations

Mr. Martin,

Thank you for the information. Yes, I have been using the US Army Military History Institute, Carlisle Barracks website and the Institute itself for well over twelve years. I have visited there about a half dozen times. Whenever I have gone on temporary duty up there I would always tag on a day at my expense to do research. If ever I was forced to live north of the Mason-Dixon Line I would choose Carlisle, PA to live. I need to scheme on getting back up that way but it is difficult since I retired and an additional 600 miles further south.

I will save you some money and share a resource with you. Me and my practically worthless U.S. dollars are hard to separate. I try and pinch every penny so hard that it makes Lincoln have some regrets. Many books prior to 1910 have been scanned and are accessible online. Below are two books you reference at no charge.

History of the First regiment of Tennessee volunteer cavalry in the great war of the rebellion, with the armies of the Ohio and Cumberland, under Generals Morgan, Rosecrans, Thomas, Stanley and Wilson. 1862-1865

I read Hancock's Diary back in 1998 while I was attending a school at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas. The account is pretty good but it is about the 22nd (Barteau's) Tennessee Cavalry Regiment and not the 2nd (Ashby's) Tennessee Cavalry Regiment. I was all excited originally because one of my ancestors was in Ashby's 2nd but when I got a hold of it and found out different it was a let down. Below is the link for the book. You can download it in PDF format on the left side of the page.
