General Thomas had replaced Rosecrans at Chattanooga. The 9th.Battalion at the time was with SD Lee's Cavalry Corps up from North Alabama and attempting in early March to damage the Memphis & Charleston RR. There was skirmishing at Collierville and Lawrenceberg,Tn. I do not know why Cyrus did not return to Alabama earlier with his Battalion. I do know that a grandfather, the 9th. Battalion Chaplain, was captured at Sugar Creek,Tn.,on March 3 after visiting with his family earlier near Culleoka. I would suggest that Cyrus was probably doing the same when the Federals caught him. Fortunately for the Chaplain he was exchanged the following Jan.22 and unfortunately for Cyrus he went on to Ft Delaware. It is probable our ancestors would have been temporarily held together at Nashville and Louisville while on the way north.
I see that Lt.Volney Cyrus did survive the war and was at the Battalion Reunion Aug.14,1890.
