Sergt. James E. Edgerton, Co. A, 25th SC Inf Regt was cited for heroism ("Roll of Honor"), while on detached svc with the Signal Corps at Battery Gregg, Charleston Harbor, per GO 64, A&IGO, Richmond, VA, 10 Aug 1864. (See I OR 28 (1), 580.) I am trying to determine whether he was a sgt when detailed to signal service and the date, or promoted in his parent unit while on detail. (I do not believe that he was ever appointed a Signal Sergt, which would have entailed transfer or release.)
