In a sketch written by W.H. Edwards for The Lantern (Chester, SC, July 21, 1908) he states:
“Brev. 2nd Lieut. James W. Connor. Appointed adjutant 17th Regt. May 1862; mortally wounded at Petersburg July 17th and died July 19th, 1864.”
“1st Sergt. W. H. Edwards. Elected 1st lieut. May, 1862; promoted captain September, 1862, and held that position until the close of the war; severely wounded at Petersburg, Va., July 17th, 1864; also severely wounded at Fort Stedman March 25th, 1865; still living in Chester.”

The date for Connor conflicts with the one listed in the Yorkville Enquirer for June 29, 1864, which says he died on the 18th of June, 1864.
