Re: Co. F, 5th SC Infantry at Sharpsburg?

George,

Thanks so much that information. Considering that Company F probably numbered a dozen or fewer men at that time, finding records of two casualties in the Maryland Campaign, to me, amounts to significant proof of the company's presence.

My ancestor in the 5th SC was my great-grandfather, Private John Clayton Farris (aka Faires, Faries) of Company F. He was wounded at Seven Pines, but returned to duty July 9th, and was present for Second Manassas and the Maryland Campaign. He was wounded a second time at the Wilderness, May 6, 1864, and a third time sometime in October 1864 around Petersburg. He was present at the surrender at Appomattox.

I am putting together a paper about Farris' military service for my cousins, and need only to finish the Maryland Campaign to complete 1862 (Farris was "absent sick" at Fredericksburg). While organizing my notes and tying up some loose ends I ran into a clue which, combined with other clues from family history that suggest the Farris family were not fire-breathing secessionists, gave me cause to wonder if Company F was among those who refused to invade northern soil.

Do you have an ancestor in this regiment? If so, I'd love to compare notes and sources with another researcher.

Thanks again. You've been a big help.
