Most likely the mentioned duties are related to a telegraph station. Electric Battery's were also used with remote detonation of some types of torpedos (water mines) in use at the time.

The 27th SC was formed in Sept 1863 by combining the Charleston Battalion and the 1st SC Sharpshooters. Various duties on the SC coast till May 1864 when the 27th SC along with the rest of Hagoods Brigade was sent north to Virginia. Participated in the Bermuda Hundred Campaign, then into the trenches of Petersburg till Dec 1864, when they were sent to the NC coast.
