Smith for the duration of the war, admitted May 7, 1864 General Hospital, Charlottesville, Va., died of wounds May 22, 1864, gunshot wound, right knee joint with extensive injury amputation at junction inferior & middle third patient sank a few hours after operation [sic], his mother Jane Coggins filed claim for settlement of his accounts July 18, 1864

Note: He must have been dropped from the rolls sometime before November 2, 1863, the date of the first Company C muster roll following his last recording on November, 1862 as he does not appear on any further rolls
