Evans' Company, from the 28th Regiment South Carolina Militia,* elected to command the Company July 7, 1863, elected Major July 31, stationed near Georgetown, detailed for court martial November 18, 1863, granted leave of absence December 5, 1863, signs special requisitions for paper supplies and a wall tent, December 31, 1863 at Camp Witherspoon near Georgetown, no further records

* This company subsequently became Company K, 4th Regiment South Carolina State Troops, mustered into Confederate service September 14, 1864 for State service and local defense, for six months from August 1, 1863

John C. Evans, Private, Company A, 23rd Regiment South Carolina Infantry (Hatch's Regiment Coast Rangers), enlisted February 1, 1864 at Georgetown by Maj. Durham for the war, absent sick March 24 to April 30, 1864, elected Captain March 7, 1864, last recorded present on the Jan. & Feb., 1865 muster roll, captured at Dinnwiddie C. H., Va. April 1, 1865, sent to Depot Prisoners of War, near Sandusky, Ohio, released on subscribing to the Oath of Allegiance to the U. S. June 18 at Johnson's Island, Ohio prison camp, description: resident of Cheraw, S. C., age 43, fair complexion, dark hair, 6' 0"
