Did the men at Rock Island and other Federal prisons who took the Oath of Allegiance to the United States (Galvanized Yankees, etc.) take the oath orally as individuals when they signed on for the U.S. Volunteers, did they take it in groups, or did they simply sign the Oath on paper? My gg grandfather, 19th Alabama, was a Galvanized Yankee. I have his records which show his signature on the Oath.
