Many that were trapped in the pocket between the lines close to the Federal side after awhile chose to surrender than risk certain death trying to get back to their own distant lines.
I had one ancestor in the 27th SC that was wounded in the leg and captured in this engagement. He died of his wounds later on July 5th while being held at Ft.Monroe.
