Page 369 in "South Carolina, A History," by Walter Edgar, tells of this Civil War hospital that was managed by the women of Columbia, South Carolina. Volunteers worked in shifts, tending soldiers and preparing three hundred meals a day. More than seventy-five thousand soldiers received assistance of some kind during the hospital's existence (1862-1865).
