John B. Moore, age 18, Private, Capt. Andrew Jackson's (1st) Company B*, 5th Regiment South Carolina Infantry, enlisted April 13, 1861 in the Yorkville/York Dist. by Andrew Jackson, for 12 months, promoted to 5th Sergeant December 14, 1861, advanced to 2nd Sergeant, n.d., recorded on July 1, 1862 as absent, wounded in the battle of Gaines Mills, Virginia, June 27, in hospital, furloughed for 30 days on July 5, recorded at the end of the year as absent, furlough expired, remaining absent through February, 1863 and returning before the end of June, 1863, captured at Chattanooga, Tenn., October 29, 1863, sent to Nashville, then to Camp Morton, Indiana Prison Camp via Louisville, Ky., November 9, arriving the next day, paroled and transferred for exchange March 15, 1865, to Point Lookout, Maryland prison camp, via the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad, no further records

The 5th Regiment South Carolina Infantry was organized about April 13, 1861, for twelve months and mustered into the service of the Confederate States June 4, 1861. At expiration of the original term of service it was broken up and a large number of the men re-enlisted in the Palmetto Regiment, South Carolina Sharp Shooters, and some in the 6th Regiment South Carolina Infantry. It was re-organized for the war April 23, 1862, and was then composed of men who had formerly served in the twelve months organizations of the 5th, 6th, and 9th Regiments South Carolina Infantry, and some recruits.
