As the great-granddaughter of JBC, I thank you for decorating his grave. I have never been there, but I am planning to next Saturday, Nov. 20, 2010. I can shed a bit of light on this man. He was, in fact born in SC and died in Sarasota, but he lived in Lonoke, AR, for many years where he and his wife (for whom I am named) raised their 7 children. When he "retired" they moved to Sarasota and he was in real estate, investing in the land boom going on at that time. He was mayor of Sarasota and owned quite a lot of property, including the Bay View Hotel. Unfortunately, almost everything was lost in the mid-1920's when the banks began failing due to a crash in real estate in the Sarasota area. This happened before the major stock market crash of '29. History does repeat itself.
I don't know who the original "Burwell" was, but Jacob's grandfather was Dr. Burwell Chick (1776-1847) from around Greenville, SC. He had and hotel and spa named Chick Springs in that area. I have no information about Dr.Chick's parents. Thnk you for your interest.
