Company A, 1st SC Provisional

A letter dated 27 July 1863 by J. O. McLemore (Company A, 1st South Carolina Provisional - McCreary's) to his father Willis in the University of Virginia manuscripts collection states that McLemore rejoined the company on 26 July, and he reports the following comrades present (in the aftermath of the battle of Gettysburg). Italics are mine as possible expansions: Lieutenants [George S.] Newman and [Samuel S.] Owens; Sergeants [Lunsford F.; or V.] Harley, and [William W.] Williams; Corporals [Washington] Halford, [William M.] Baxley and [W. A.] Chatman; Privates [J. W.] Burt, [William H.] Craddick [Craddock], [J.; or William] Dix [or A.; J. A.; or Joseph Dicks], [J.] Holland, [Thomas] Mason, [J. W.] Minns, [William L.] Moody, Calvin [?], Steph. Owens, [Lemuel] Stringfellow, Tools [Julius L. Tool or Toole], [William D.] Williamson, and Ben Webb. McLemore reports the following as prisoners: Charley [Charles Ashley] Willis, Jim [James] Tyler, Turner Webb, Jack [John W.?] Armstrong, Minors [Miner W.] Wooley. McLemore reports all of the wounded were taken prisoner except for Holland and Steph. Owens. Separately, a diary kept by Charles Ashley Willis that is in the Southern Historical Collection at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill lists the following men from his company in prison in New York: Sergeant J. C. Hogg, wounded in foot 1 July; Sergeant J. F. Sprawls, thigh broken 1 July; Private M. W. Wooley, died 25 July; and Private J. Grubbs, wounded side 2 July. Other casualties listed include: Private J. P. Holland, wounded shoulder 1 July; Private B. C. Matthews, mortally wounded 1 July and died 2 July; Private S. Owens, wounded hand 1 July; Lieutenant G. S. Newman, wounded neck 2 July; Private A. Wooley, wounded foot 2 July; Private J. Grubbs, wounded side 2 July; Private J. W. Hair, wounded side 2 July; Private S. W. Ussery, killed 3 July; Private E. L. Peacock, killed 3 July; Private W. L. Moody, wounded hand 3 July; Private T. J. Dunn, mortally wounded 3 July; Corporal D. W. Bush, wounded arm 3 July; and Private [?] Weeks, wounded side 3 July. Willis himself states that he was captured near Greencastle, Pennsylvania on the retreat and was paroled on 6 July. Taken together, these two sources provide a rather complete roster of the company in the July 1863 timeframe.
