Re: Bright Burrell, 1st South Carolina Cavalry Co.

Ken:

Here's a little information on the color bearer of the 5th SC Cavalry.

SCOTT, James Jervey (1845–1925): PVT, Charleston Dist. b. 31 Aug 1845. Enlisted in Co. B (Dixie Rangers) at Camp Gist, James Island, SC, 20 Mar 1862, age 16. Appt. regimental color bearer, 1864. Last recorded on clothing receipt roll, dated 25 Dec 1864. Post-war, farmer in Dorchester Co., SC. Applied for a Confederate pension at Dorchester, SC, 16 Oct 1919. d. 11 Mar 1925, Dorchester Co., SC.

The 5th SC Cavalry apparently used the Dept. of SC, GA & FL version of the Confederate battle flag. A spare was found in one of the regiment's supply wagons that was captured by the 9th NY Cavalry under Custer at Trevilian Station, VA on 11 Jun 1864. The flag was returned to SC a few years ago, and is now in the Confederate Relic Room and Museum in Columbia.

Hope this is of some interest.
